What’s in a Name?

The tree I chose awhile ago has changed a lot. It has grown more plants next to it and many more leaves, and it seems taller. We are reading a book called Wishtree and we learned how two characters, Red and Bongo got their names. I got my name, Cole, just because my parents liked it.  It means, swarthy, coal black, and cabbage. I am naming my tree Branches because my tree has a lot of long branches. We also photographed an animal near it, and I did a bee I am naming the bee lightning because it was fast.  We also have to create a dialogue between the tree and animal so here is my dialogue.

Bee: Good morning

Tree: Hello, how has your day been

Bee: Alright, I keep getting attacked by these kids

Tree: Yeah, they can be annoying.
Bee: Have you seen the new building that they built?

Tree: What do you mean?

Bee: They built a new building near the fields
Tree: No one told me that, what do you think about the construction that will happen here soon
Bee: It is going to be hectic, hopefully they don’t cut you down.
Tree: Yeah hopefully not, well, see you later
Bee: Bye, good luck

Tree Book

In LA over the past month we have been working on a project where we are creating a tree book and putting pieces of writing inside. To create this book we went through a process of screen printing the covers of our book, akua ink printing plants we collected, cutting covers out into trees, collaging with the printed plants, and adding our writing to the book. This was all possible with help from an artist called Ms. Gignoux, here is a link to her website:
https://gignouxart.com/ . Creating this book was a fun mix of writing and art that I have never done anything like before, and I enjoyed it. Here are the writing pieces I made along with more photos of the finished book.

This is important to me because I love animals and have always wanted a pet.I wish to maintain good grades (A and above) throughout middle school and high school. This is important to me because getting good grades in middle school and high school can help me get into a good college and can help me learn about different topics. I wish to go to college and graduate. This is important to me because going to and graduating college will help me get a good job and help me learn about life. I wish to get a good job that I enjoy. This is important to me because having a good job can help me make money and start a family. I wish to learn a right brained activity. This is important to me because I have always been creative and have been interested in different subjects besides school. I wish to travel to many different countries. This is important to me because I enjoy traveling and seeing new places. I wish to be remembered as a great person. This is important to me because being a kind and positive person will make others happy and having a good reputation is important to me.

I wish that in our world that our oceans and our air could have no pollution and that everyone could breathe clean air. I wish that everyone could have access to health care and vaccines and shots so they could be free of sickness. I wish that every person could come home to a warm place to sleep away from the cold and the rain. I wish that people would not have to fear violence of any kind and could live life knowing they are safe. And I wish that every empty stomach could be filled.

SALUTE TO MY ROOTS!

  1. My Dad has had a huge impact on my life. He has many characteristics that I look up to such as, hard working, caring and kindness. But the characteristics that make him a role model to me the most are his selflessness and his work ethic. These traits have always made me look up to him as a father and an example. He has also accomplished many things that I really admire such as playing soccer all throughout high school, going to college, becoming a graduate of law school, and getting a good job. Thank you Dad.

  1. My Mom has had a huge impact on my life. She has always supported  me with anything I do, in school, sports, or any interest I might have. She has always been so much fun to be around and can make anything small a lot of fun through her constant energy and excitement. My mom has been an encouraging role model and has always been very caring and kind. Thank you Mom.

  1. My Grandma or Nan has had a huge impact on my life. I have always looked up to her because of her constant kindness, selflessness, loving and caring nature. One thing that I really admire about her is how she always puts others before herself and tries to make everybody happy. She has always been so supportive of me. She has come to as many sports games and school events as possible. I really feel lucky to have someone like her in my life. Thank you Nan.

  1. My brother has had a huge impact on my life. He has always been a role model for me through school, sports, and everyday life. He has always cared for me and been a lot of fun to be around because of his happy energy. I am grateful that I am his brother. Thank you Miles.

Fingerprints

In LA we learned about fingerprints, we took our own fingerprints and learned facts about fingerprints my fingerprints are below.
Here are some facts about fingerprints.

1. Twins do not share the same fingerprints.            Even identical twins do not share the same fingerprints. While twins’ physical features and DNA may be similar, their fingerprints are different

2. Arches are the rarest types of fingerprints.                      Arches make up only 5% of the population.

3. Police first used fingerprinting in 1892.
In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Eduardo Álvarez made the first criminal fingerprint identification.

4. Some people are born without fingerprints.                    Rare genetic conditions can prevent fingerprints.

5. Koalas, gorillas and chimpanzees all have fingerprints

6. Fingerprints are the result of struggle

Stock Market Game

This is a project that we are working on in LA. In this project we are making an investment company and choosing stocks to invest in and seeing how much money we can make. We are doing this project because in a book we are reading, The Westing Game, there is a character that is obsessed with the stock market. Me and my friend Pike are working together and we made the company Lightning Bolt Stocks

We invested in 4 stocks, Nexstar Media Group Inc. AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc., Southwest Airlines, and GameStop Corp. We invested in Nexstar because it has been going up, and was at a lower point when we bought it. Next we invested in AMC because with the vaccine coming out more people could be going to movie theaters. We invested in Southwest because it has been going up in the long term, but in the short term it is at a lower point, and we think that again, with the vaccine coming out more people will fly. We invested in GameStop because we think that it will keep going up after it’s short burst.

Lady or the Tiger

We read the short story The Lady or the Tiger by Frank Stockton. Here is a link to the story http://pinkmonkey.com/dl/library1/digi506.pdf   Then we wrote endings since Frank Stockton didn’t end the story for us. Here is my ending and a drawing of what the scene may have looked like: The man opens the door. And out comes the extrisiasite lady, the princess cannot look, but she has a plan. Out comes the priest and the two are married happily with joy from the crowd and flowers. The man doesn’t know what to think, he doesn’t know whether to be happy or upset, his life was not stripped away, but he is not married to the one he loves. The two lived in an odd happiness for 2 months while the princess organized her plans. They were happy together, but something was off, if it didn’t feel right. The man still had a gigastric emptiness in his life. He longed to be with the princess again, he would stay up late nights thinking about her, remembering what it used to be like, oh how he wished they could be together once more. It had taken the princess quite some time to organize her plan but the night had finally come, she would have her revenge, her heart was burning and she could not wait any longer. She goes down into the city, when she arrives at the couple’s house she can see they are eating. She must wait. The next day she sets off at the same time at night, she sneaks into the house through a window left open, she see dishes laid out for the morning’s breakfast, the princess grins, finally, she reaches into her pocket and pulls it out, a poison, she rubs it into one of the cups and scatters away as quickly as she came in. The couple have their breakfast as usual, or so they thought. The lady takes one sip of her drink and passes out. The man calls for help and out comes the princess. His heart warms, his cheeks blush and he understands. The lady smiles and they both hop onto a horse and ride for miles and miles away to live happily and safely in the reextraciating countryside.

Book trailer

The link directly above this is a link to a book trailer I made about a book called Prodigy. Prodigy by John Feinstein, is a suspenseful and intense book about golf. However anyone who likes sports will enjoy this book. Frank, the main character is a teenaged golfer who qualifies for the Masters, the biggest tournament in golf. But his father cares more about the money and is coming close to ruining his career. The people closest to him are changing for the money, and his caddy and his caddy’s friend are the only two people who want to help, or so it seems.

Sports Update

Welcome to my blog. I am just posting some recent sports news.

Soccer player Christians Ronaldo tests positive for Covid-19. He is in isolation and apparently not showing symptoms. His national team Portugal will not have him when they play Sweden on Wednesday.

Also, golfer Dustin Johnson tested positive and will miss the next tournament on the tour, the CJ Cup

And obviously the Lakers beat the Heat in the NBA Finals, unfortunately I was going for the Heat. Lebron James now has his fourth ring with his third team. Lebron was also named Finals MVP. And the Lakers now have their seventeenth title

Storytelling

Storytelling has been going on for a long time. Storytelling between people began about 35,000 years ago with drawings in the Chavauet Cave in France that displayed pictures. People used gestures to help tell the stories. The first evidence of symbols in a pictographic script were hieroglyphics found in Ancient Egypt from around 5,000 years ago. In 1799 we discovered The Rosetta Stone, which is a bilingual text that makes it possible to decipher Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs through Greek and Demodic. Maya Glyphs were the writing system of the Maya in about 3rd Century BCE, and the glyphs were very similar in function to Japanese writing today. People would write down stories so they would be remembered, to preserve and tell about the past, or to pass them down. And today we tell stories all the time and it started 35,000 years ago and has advanced to what we have today.

Many stories can have similar meanings. Two stories that I believe have similar meanings are The Red and Blue Coat in which there are two very very close friends who built houses and farms opposite each other and are working opposite each other one day when a trickster puts on a coat that is red from one side and blue from the other and he walks past them. The two friends get into a bad fight about the color of the coat. The second story that has a similar meaning is called A Dispute in Sign Language in which a monk wants to study with a master and the master tells him to talk with his student and make his decision. The monk goes and uses sign language with the student and there is a misunderstanding the monk thinks the student is showing him that he is wiser and runs off embarrassed. The student thinks that the monk was insulting him however and they both go back to the master and explain their side of the story. These stories both show that there are always multiple sides to an event and that you won’t be right without acknowledging the other side. If the friends could have calmed down and realized that the coat could have been a different color on each side they wouldn’t have started fighting. And if the monk and the student had been more clear with each other and seen that there could be misunderstandings, there wouldn’t have been an issue.

Old stories can apply to many things going on in the modern day. The story featured in the previous paragraph, A Dispute in Sign Language applies to modern day because people hardly ever look at both sides of something, people are just focused on their own views and values. Another example is how there can be misunderstandings that lead to bad things happening and that happens a lot just like not looking at both sides does. And they both happen on smaller, and larger scales and this story shows us just how silly we can be about disagreements.

Thanksgiving

This is a post about Thanksgiving.

10 things I am thankful for

-Parents -Friends -Food -Water -Clothes -Sports -Coaches -Grandparents -Brother -Good health

My family usually has a meal together with my grandma and sometimes my Uncle, Aunt and cousins will come but we couldn’t do that this year because of COVID. Sometimes my family will travel but we couldn’t go because of COVID again. That is all though nothing else was changed.
